TONY MANSFIELD

UNRELEASED PRODUCER / SONGWRITER / MUSICIAN PROJECTS

This page lists all unreleased "projects" by Tony Mansfield, as far as I have been able to gather. The information is gathered from various sources, some probably more reliable than others. Some songs are available on the net, while many are not. (Please don't ask me where you can find them, because in the few cases that someone sent anything to me, I had to promise not to share!) We can only hope that someday, this music will be released.

late 1970s unreleased demo Tony Mansfield: Emily James

(See my page "New Musik - The Story")

1979 unreleased track Tony Mansfield: Love Train

Recorded just prior to the main FROM A TO B sessions.

1979 unreleased demo tape Tony Mansfield [titles unknown]

Recorded just prior to the main FROM A TO B sessions. This demo tape is mentioned in chapter 13 in Pete Hammond's book "Get Down Here Quick and Mix Yourself a Hit", where he writes "Ironically the songs that got Tony his initial deal with GTO never got released". It is possible that "Emily James" and "Love Train" were both part of this tape.

18 April 1980 withdrawn promo 7" After the Fire: Love Will Always Make You Cry

Love Will Always Make You Cry / Every Mother's Son 2.30 (Epic, S EPC 8394)
Both tracks produced by Tony Mansfield. This original version of 'Love Will Always...' was only pressed as a promo single and some copies were shipped out, but the single was withdrawn. The B-side Every Mother's Son was issued again as a B-side to 'Wild West Show' on 24 Oct 1980. The B-side is included as an extra track on the After the Fire double CD "Der Kommissar - The CBS Recordings" (Edsel Records MEDCD 757) in 2005. On 22 Aug 1980 a second pressing of this single (EPC 8942) was released, produced by Mack instead, and with a new non-Mansfield produced B-side.

April/May? 1980 test pressing LP AFTER THE FIRE: 80-F

  1. Starflight
  2. High Fashion
  3. Another World
  4. Can You Face It?
  5. Operator
  1. Love Will Always Make You Cry
  2. 1980-F
  3. Satellite in Orbit
  4. Who's Gonna Love You
  5. Billy Billy
  6. Starflight (reprise)
Tony Mansfield produced this entire LP approximately from Nov 1979 to March 1980 (engineered by Pete Hammond at the T.M.C. Studios, Tooting, England) but the record company did not approve of his production.

Further info from https://www.discogs.com/After-The-Fire-80-f/release/15004826: "This acetate is a proto version of the album that became 80-f, recorded by Tony Mansfield before April 1980. Nick Brotherwood provided Drums as Ivor Twydell had left at the end of 1979. When completed, the album was presented to CBS, who rejected it. They subsequently sent the band off to Germany, with ex-Fly's drummer Peter King, to complete the album with producer Mack, who rebuilt the album. Four songs were dropped (Another World / Operator / Satellite In Orbit / Starflight reprise) and three new songs were added (Wild West Show / Why Can't We Be Friends / Joanne). The version of 1980-F on this acetate is the same version used on the 1983 US compilation [FE 38282], and Love Will Always Make You Cry was edited for the aborted single [S EPC 8942]."

Julian Carr told me 13 Nov 1999: "When this LP was rejected, Mack took over (in April 1980). Mack took the [old] tracks and mostly added extra layers, and re-recorded drumming (drums on the Mansfield version were by Nick Brotherwood - he left, and Pete King joined instead and did the Mack version). At least one acetate of the original album exists, pressed at Tape One. The new Mack-produced LP (Epic SEPC 84545) was released 24 Oct 1980."

1980/1981 unreleased track "Pleasure Moves" NEW MUSIK: ANYWHERE

Lee Mansfield told me 14 April 2001: "There were a few tracks that were written around the same time [Anywhere sessions] that were never released. One I remember being played on a radio interview with Tony (Radio Jackie - a local South London based station) and it was called 'Pleasure Moves' - it had a similar feel to 'From The Village'." Lee even recalled some lyrics: "Once when friends stood together, change of time, change of weather, always the same, they've gone again...yet you remain... Oh it's a pleasure to be here, those moves are only for you, it's what you do - Your pleasure moves, your pleasure moves...."

19 Feb - 2 April 1982 unused theme for "Finders Keepers" Season 2 Tony Mansfield

"Finders Keepers" was a BBC children's game show. This unused version is the original version submitted by Tony and Lee Mansfield in 1982. According to IMDB Peter Gosling composed the original theme (for season 1, 1981), and this 1982 You Tube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhk8VlndVpo confirms its continued use in series 2.

late 1982 ca unreleased LP PLANET HA HA

Lee Mansfield told me: "Planet Ha-Ha were originally to become NEW MUSIK II. Besides 'Home' and 'Finders Keepers' an album's worth of material was recorded, but due to the legal issues pending around Home, EMI delayed releasing the album, and eventually the various members moved on to other projects leaving the recorded tracks in the archives."

25 Feb - 1 April 1983 theme for "Finders Keepers" Season 3 Tony Mansfield

Lee & Tony then submitted an alternate version per the first link below, which the BBC slightly edited for the actual theme. The second link below confirms its use in series three and demonstrates that the first part of the intro had been removed and then the end is early faded when the applause comes in. For series 4 presenter Richard Stilgoe composed the theme himself due to budget cuts.

A purported two minute version appears here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnrbNjekrSo but it's simply a merger of slightly shortened edits of the original versions 1 & 2 in that order.

1984 unreleased LP MARI WILSON

According to Mari Wilson's official site, there was a "1984 unreleased second album". I assume that the single "Let's Make This Last" was part of that project.

1984 unreleased LP VICIOUS PINK: BLUE

Vicious Pink recorded an entire LP with Tony in the summer of 1984, but it was not released. Brian Moss (of Vicious Pink) emailed me 13 June 2000, telling me this story: "I can remember recording the VP album at Ridge Farm studios in Capel near Dorking. Jose and I had a great time with Tony [Mansfield], Rob [Fisher], Pete [Byrne], Jools the engineer, Frank the studio owner, Speedy Kean {Thunderclap newman} and many more! It was the summer of 84' with nine weeks of laughter and many visits to the local pub! to drink our favorite beer Old Rodger!!! After the pub we would do some more recording or get into party mode! Once I nearly set Tony's BMW on fire trying to charge my radio controled truck up!!".

Brian told me 25 May 2012: "We did have a rough track list, but I don't have it. We wrote a short story for the album too, that's missing, it's possible that Tony still has them".

Only a couple of singles were released after this, plus a Canadian LP in 1986 with the singles plus some remixes. Brian made some of the unreleased tracks available on SoundCloud.

1984/1985 unreleased album CAPTAIN SENSIBLE

Around late 1984/early 1985 Tony and Captain Sensible started work on a third album. According to some information on the net, songs that were recorded include "(Within the) Bouncing Ball", "Dreaming" and "English Garden". Because of musical differences between Tony and Captain, however, the recordings were abandoned part way through and Captain went on to write entirely new songs for a new album with a different producer. So, the third LP with Tony and Captain remains entirely unreleased.

Captain Sensible himself told the story on http://www.terrascope.co.uk/MyBackPages/Captain%20Sensible.htm "I had far less control over the second album because Mansfield was becoming a bit of a megalomaniac. He tended to swamp the record with his sequencers. He totally relegated my guitar, the computers took his brain over until he worked his way up his own arse. We did a third album, I sunk every penny from "Happy Talk" into it and in the end I junked the lot. It just wasn't my album any more - it was well produced, but shit, without a spark of inspiration. Mansfield was such a dictatorial figure by this time that he would suggest that Robyn's lyrics were substandard and tell him to go away and do them again and tell me to change a tune or something, so we'd rehash the tracks and he'd still turn them down. In the end Robyn had had enough and left, the money was all used up and I was totally demoralised by the whole thing. Eventually I plucked up the courage to sack Mansfield, which was quite a big thing because I had all the hits with him. But, I'd finally had enough and told him to fuck off."

1985 unreleased track "This Beat" RE-FLEX

Roland Kerridge sent me an email 1 Jan 2007: "Hi There, I just found your page dedicated to Tony and felt I needed to fill in something. I was the drummer from EMI band Re-Flex and whilst we were looking for a producer for our second album, I suggested Tony as I was a great fan of his work. We ended up recording a track with him called "this beat". We started recording it at Utopia studios and went straight on to Eel Pie to finish it. Unfortunately it did not turn out as we had hoped and was never released by the record company, but I still have a copy. Thought you might be interested."

He added the day after: "I have dug out the tape, which is a very rough mix. I remember that we did not finish it. The main reason it was never finished was that we all felt that it was not really representative of the band, which is ultimately the reason for not going with Tony to produce our second album. We started work on the track on a Friday, and Tony went straight through Saturday and most of Sunday without sleep! I found out later that this was fairly normal for him. We then went to Eel Pie studios to finish it on the Monday, by which time everyone was shattered and during that evening our A&R man came to the studio, but was not happy with what he heard so Tony was off the case. This in no way detracted from my appreciation of what Tony did and I remain a fan of his recordings, especially the New Musik records. The dates of the sessions are still unclear but the tape I have was dated 7th April 1985, which would be about the right time frame. Kind regards Roland Kerridge."

1988 LP/CD ADELE BERTEI: LITTLE LIVES

Gary Shipes informed me: "Supposedly, Ms. Bertei recorded an entire album with Tony, but according to an article I read at the time, they absolutely DESPISED each other and she shelved it and moved back to the U.S. where she made this album."

autumn ca 1998 unreleased film music

Lee Mansfield sent me this info 15 Aug 1998: "Tony is planning to re-record a new version of 'From the Village' and a reworked version of 'Living By Numbers' to put forward to the makers of the new 'Prisoner' movie that is in the early stages of pre-production."

late 1998 ca unreleased CD eMUSIK

Lee Mansfield sent me this information 10 Aug 1998: "Tony has recently completed a new batch of compositions destined to be part of a fresh New Musik album. Negotiations are underway between Tony's management and several major record labels for an international release. Tony has decided to call the project 'eMusik' (as opposed to New Musik) for several reasons, mainly personal. He feels that a lot of water has passed under the proverbial bridge since 'Warp' was released, and today the title 'New Musik' might sound rather trite. Also, at this point, Tony is the sole writer and musician. Last week Tony and I edited together a reference CD of four new tracks to be used for record label purposes. The four titles are: 1/ Crossfire 2/ Carwashed 3/ Chemical 4/ The Same Place. In my opinion, these tracks represent some of the most beautiful and haunting songs Tony has written. The old New Musik 'sound' is still very much in evidence, tempered by a more intimate, fragile and spacious feel. As soon as I have more information I will let you know."

Tony Mansfield was interviewed online 5 Jan 2000, where he said: "1) A new "new musik" album is in production and should be released in autumn this year." I assume he was referring to this e-Musik album.

1999 ca (?) unreleased track Tony Mansfield: Talks

2004 unreleased album PLANET HAHA

Apparently this album contains new tracks by Tony's 1982 project, with Lee on vocals, as well as older, reworked tracks.
