Records recorded 1979-1982 that were never originally approved for release by Tony


(Tony Carey explained to me 2 April 2014: "I wrote at least 250 little sketches and songs between 79-82. Peter Hauke released these as instrumental records, on his own label, to get a tax write-off. These weren't meant to be instrumental, they were songs I was working on. The first instrumental record I INTENTIONALLY recorded was 'Yellow Power', which was pretty good. The next was 'TCP', which I thought was very good. All of the others [No Human, Heaven, Explorer, Rare Tracks] are ripoffs, which is why I ignore them for the most part. 'In the Absence of the Cat' was made up of instrumentals that I'd actually SUNG. The first record I made AS A RECORD was 'I Won't Be Home Tonight'. ... 'Planet P' was basically finished in '82, and a lot of 'Some Tough City' was in instrumental form. The songwriting didn't change; I just got better in the studio as I learned more about it. Peter Hauke was never in the studio and had no idea what I was recording. He and Andy Lunn mixed the first two Planet P records and the first 3 TC solo records. Then I got tired of not getting paid and left... :) There aren't any tapes left.... water damage and Hauke's 3 bankruptcies and 35 years made sure of that.)

All instruments and vocals by Tony Carey, exept drums by Frankie Banali & Hartmut Pfannmüller, and electric guitars by Reinhard Besser. Tony himself commented later on: "Absence of the Cat was kind of demos. I was working in a studio. This guy had invested some money in the studio, so I guess he had a right to put it out. But it wasn’t anything to put out."

All tracks recorded 1979-1981, written by Tony Carey, produced by Peter Hauke. Only released on this very hard-to-find CD in 1993. The booklet says "1-3, 5-10, 12 & 18 are previously unreleased." This CD was apparently never approved by Tony Carey for release and apparently he also never got any money from the sales.

These songs were recorded from 1991 to the mid 90s. Tony Carey: bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals, producer, engineer. Koen VanBaal: guitar, drums, keyboards. A fan posted a scanned fax online sent from Tony to him in August of 1997, which stated that he was working on the album and had plans to release it in February of 1998. The release was postponed however, until 2002 when it was for sale online for a short perdiod directly from the official Tony Carey site. This was at a time when Michael Bagnall run that site. According to Tony, Michael never had the rights to put it out, and unfortunately it all ended in great animosity. In any case, according to Michael there are maybe 10 copies of the original CD in existence, all one-offs from the master (no I don't own any!). Amongst fans it has more or less been titled "Go out Dancing - The Demo" but it was never considered as a demo at the time it was put together. In Germany there are laws that dictate how certain historical events (such as Hitler and the Nazis) can be presented in culture. Apparently the original recordings were pretty much unreleaseable because it contained actual audio of Hitler's speeches and other kinds of World War II propaganda. The album was mastered by a company in Germany (this was before Tony was mastering his own recordings) and if you listen to the songs in their original order with no gaps you can tell it was intended for release. It was finally released officially in the G.O.D.B.O.X. in 2014, "properly mastered" (see later entry).

This first BOX is autographed and limited to only 200 copies. Unfortunately one track (The New Frontier on CD 2) was wrongly mixed (one rhythm track was out of rhythmn) but Tony sent a corrected version as a WAV file to all purchasers. The corrected version will be on future editions (making the wrong version "rare"!). The booklet includes the interesting story of Planet P Project. I just wish Tony would have included the few missing alternate and fantastic original versions.
