RECOIL

A GUIDE TO THE MUSIC

(All catalogue numbers and release dates refer to the UK.)

18 Aug 1986 LP (+ CD) 1 + 2

  1. 1 (14.24)
  2. 2 (18.35) (LP: STUMM 31; CD: CD STUMM 51)
A repetitive dream collage of previously released and unreleased Depeche Mode sound samples. This clearly shows who sits in the studio and creates all the samples (Alan!). The CD contains this and his next solo album.

25 Jan 1988 LP/CD HYDROLOGY

  1. Grain 7.43
  2. Stone 14.30
  3. The Sermon 15.02 (LP/CD: STUMM/CDSTUMM 51)
Very different from the normal and structured Depeche Mode. It displays more aspects of Alan's musical training and knowledge: calm, classical piano pieces, dreamy passages, but also faster and tougher synth landscapes. Well worth investigating. The CD also contains his previous solo album.

    CD:
  1. Faith Healer 5.58 [vocals: Douglas McCarthy from 'Nitzer Ebb']
  2. Electro Blues for Bukka White 8.58 [vocals from 'Shake 'em on down' by Bukka White]
  3. The Defector 8.01
  4. Edge to Life 6.08 [vocals: Toni Halliday from 'Curves']
  5. Curse 7.04 [vocals: Moby]
  6. Bloodline 6.48 [vocals: Toni Halliday from 'Curves']
  7. Freeze 7.28 [CD/MC extra track, not on LP] (CDSTUMM/CSTUMM 94)
Recorded Jan-March 1991 in London. Mixed Oct-Nov 1991 at Konk Studios, London. Generally a nice album if you like heavier synths. Many fans don't like it, but I think it's a very underrated album. 1 is almost a heavy metal synth style, with violent vocals, 2 is electronic, slow and exciting, 3 has tight and electronic rhythms, not unlike DM, 4 is probably the most 'radio friendly' track, electronic with light rhythms, 5 has heavy rhythms and electronics, with rap vocals (!), 6 is quite noisy sometimes but not bad. Freeze, the CD/MC extra track, is quite different from the rest; with its lush synths and dreamy atmosphere it sounds like it was recorded earlier.

13 Oct 1997 CDM/12" Drifting

  1. Drifting 5.11
  2. Drifting (Poison Dub) 9.02 [remixed by Alan Wilder]
  3. Control Freak (Barry Adamson Remix) 5.55 [remixed by Barry Adamson]

Drifting (Poison Dub)//Control Freak (Barry Adamson Mix)/Shunt (Panasonic Mix)
    (12": 12MUTE 209)
27 Oct 1997 CD UNSOUND METHODS
  1. Incubus 7.03
  2. Drifting 6.34
  3. Luscious Apparatus 6.10
  4. Stalker 6.42
  5. Red River Cargo 8.14
  6. Control Freak 5.38
  7. Missing Piece 5.30
  8. Last Breath 6.21
  9. Shunt 6.46
Recorded Sep 1996 - March 1997. Alan's most difficult album; it's obvious that he has talent and technical knowhow - many of the tracks has great potential - but it's equally obvious that he really doesn't intend to create thoroughly edgy, dark and beautiful music the way Depeche Mode often do. Instead he walks his own strange and difficult musical paths which I think very few DM fans appreciate fully. There are three genuinly good tracks however, strangely the last three tracks, which shows what he is able to do when he really wants to: they are everything a DM fan could wish for, especially 7 and 9, and I can very well imagine them all on a DM album (with a different singer of course, and also without the change of rhythm on track 9 at 4 min 18 sec). Track 2 also has a charm with its slow jazzy rhythm, but 1 and 3-6 are often too noisy and outright scary.

9 March 1998 CDM Stalker/Missing Piece

  1. Stalker (Punished mix) 7.30 [remixed by Alan Wilder and PK]
  2. Missing Piece (Night Dissolves) 8.15 [remixed by Alan Wilder and PK]
  3. Red River Cargo 8.14 (CDM: CDMUTE 214)

  9. Chrome 7.07
  10. Black Box (Pt. 2) 5.06

  11. Strange Hours (video) 5.14 (Mute Records CDStumm 173)
Recorded and mixed at The Thin Line, Sussex, from July 1998 to June 1999. Written and produced by Alan Wilder, additional production and sound design by PK. It's a very difficult CD to review.... it's darker and more claustrophobic than his earlier works.
