LAID BACK

DISCOGRAPHY 1980-2001

1980 German 7" Maybe I'm Crazy

    Maybe I'm Crazy 3.21/We Don't Do It 4.14 (German 7": Teldec/Strand 6.12927)
A-side recorded on a 4-track at Laid Back Studio in May 1979. Tim Stahl: vocal, keyboards and acoustic drums. John Guldberg: vocal, bass and synthesizer guitar. Jorgen Thomsen: backing vocal and bongos. Overdubs and mix in Sep 1979 by Werner Scherrer at Werner's Studio. B-side recorded on a 4-track at Laid Back Studio in April 1979. Tim Stahl: vocal and keyboards. John Guldberg: vocal, guitar and bass. Jeppe Reipurth: drums. Overdubs and mix in Oct 1979 by Werner Scherrer at Werner's Studio.

"John Guldberg (vocals, guitar) & Tim Stahl (vocals, keyboards) had been booked for a studio session, but the singer they were supposed to work with didn't show up! Studio owner Werner Scherrer then said 'jam up something as you're here anyway', and that's where an embryonic duo actually started out. Guldberg & Stahl soon decided to form Laid Back, relinquishing a promising studio musician career prospect. After having peddled some early tapes all over town in Copenhagen, they were rejected and dejected... By then, they had found themselves a dynamic manager in Kjeld Wennick leading to a deal with a Hamburg-based label instead of signing up with a local Danish record company. Teldec's label Strand went on to release 'Maybe I'm Crazy' in Germany but nothing sensational happened... until it reached the shores of Denmark. ' 'Maybe I'm Crazy' went on to become a massive hit back in their native country, where record companies had earlier said 'no thanks... won't work in Denmark' ". Summer 1982 Danish 7" Sunshine Reggae

Sunshine Reggae 4.16/Step out of Your Box 4.21 (Danish 7": Medley Records MDS 211)
A-side recorded at Laid Back Studio in May/June 1981. Tim Stahl: vocal, steel drum, accordion and keyboards. John Guldberg: vocals and synthesizer guitar. Frank Marstokk: drums. Peter Hansen: bass. Mixed in May 1982 by Henrik Lund at Easy Sound Studio.

"Following the success in Denmark of 'Maybe I'm Crazy', Laid Back thought it appropriate to sign with the then funkiest label in Copenhagen - namely Medley Records (later acquired by EMI), rather than operating out of Hamburg, Germany. By the time tracks had been recorded and were submitted to Medley, there was a slight hitch... Medley didn't really like the tracks Laid Back intended for singles ['Sunshine Reggae' and 'White Horse']. A compromise was reached, though: Medley agreed to release the two favourite Laid Back single choices as a double A-side release, intending to call all shots from then on." White Horse 3.49 [edited by Bob Shaw/J.C.]/So Wie So 4.35 (US 7": Sire Records 7-29346)

Sunshine Reggae 6.35/White Horse 5.50 [edited by Bobby Shaw/John Potoker] (US 12": Sire Records 0-20178)

"This has to be one of the best-ever B sides of any 7" single. The A side was 'Sunshine Reggae', a monster hit in Europe, but... Seymour Stein of Sire Records [USA] liked it but soon found out that his crew liked the B side - 'White Horse'. Thus, the A side became 'White Horse' in the US! Besides having been used as a sample countless times by now by other artists, 'White Horse' is a textbook example of less-is-more when using synths - and, synth guitar (the very first Roland ones)! This was done way before the introduction of sequencers, MIDI, etc. Tech buffs note: TR-808, Rolands & Prophet V synths, GR synth and a lot of knob-twiddling, done live while recording but also in the mix. The fact that 'White Horse' became a US hit didn't reflect back on Europe, though. Only hardcore Laid Back buffs in Europe are aware of this track while 'Sunshine Reggae' routinely gets compilation requests whenever a Summer songs multi-artist CD release is due." 1983/1984 7" White Horse

    (Danish 7": Medley Records MDS 272; German 7": Metronome 821 236-7; Dutch 7" 1984: CNR Records 145.097)

White Horse (US Edit) 5.50/Sunshine Reggae 6.36 (Danish 12": Medley Records MDX 272)

White Horse/White Horse (Megamix) (UK 12": Creole Records CRT 63)

White Horse (US Edit) 5.50 // Fly Away/Walking in the Sunshine 8.27
    (European 12": Polydor 821 322-1; German 12": Metronome 821 236-1; Dutch 12" 1984: CNR Records 151.148)

"While Europe had 'Sunshine Reggae' as an A-side and 'White Horse' as a B-side to what was originally a double A-side single 7" release, the US simply reversed it all. Sire Rec's and Seymour Stein had signed Laid Back up on the reputation of 'Sunshine Reggae' but soon found out that 'White Horse' was hitting clubs. Next up was a 12", including a remix by Shep Pettibone, that helped launch the then-nascent 12" DJ / Dance vinyl format. By now, 'White Horse' rivals the James Brown track 'Funky Drummer' in terms of sample uses." "After 3 albums on Medley Records in Denmark, Laid Back switched to Munich-based Ariola, with 'Bakerman' as the first single for the album 'Hole in the Sky'. The single became a huge hit in Germany and elsewhere in Europe and was propelled by a highly visual videoclip powerplayed on the likes of the MTV. The clip deserves a special mention: it was conceived and directed by the acclaimed Danish film maker Lars von Trier, that back in 1989 was Danish film's 'enfant terrible' and had only released one movie, 'The Element Of Crime'. In the video, a group of skydivers impersonate a band playing the song while free-falling - they had to have helpers to hand them a parachute before digging a hole in the ground! It was very dangerous and highly unautorized; luckily, no one got arrested afterwards! It was thus done in secret over a disused military airport in Jutland, Denmark. 'Bakerman' is also the only Laid Back single that features a guest vocalist - Hanne Boel, whose soulful voice graces this track." "The follow-up to Laid Back's "Bakerman" was to be a breezy and nearly Pink Floydish ballad track, "Highway Of Love". This was in a way a departure from the synth-laden funky rhythm style normally associated with them. Again, Lars von Trier was enlisted to come up with a video idea... yet another crazy one like skydivers for "Bakerman". He figured "if we split up the car trip from New York to San Francisco in individual camera frames-per-minutes and film it non-stop, that's the video". The end result looks as if fast-forwarding a video tape!" [Comments by "MegaCC" - used by his permission, originally posted at http://www.discogs.com/release/632110]
