summer 1980 demo tape Composition of Sound

  1. Ice Machine 3.47
  2. Radio News 3.42
  3. Photographic 3.31
Recorded as "Composition of Sound" [not as "Depeche Mode"] in the summer [date unknown] at "Lower Wapping Conker Company" in Barking, Essex. Only five copies were made, to the members, to play to record companies in order to get a record deal. The songs from what has been claimed to be from one of these tapes has been made available on youtube etc.

31 Jan 1981 various artists LP (+ CD) SOME BIZZARE ALBUM

This song circulated on a demo tape in late 1980 as 'Photographic Pictures'. It's shorter, faster, darker, heavier and more hectic than the LP version. Included as a bonus track on the remastered 1998 version of 'The Singles 81-85'.

20 Feb 1981 7" (+ CDM) Dreaming of Me

    Dreaming of Me 4.00 / Ice Machine 4.04 (7": MUTE 013)
  1. Dreaming of Me 3.43 [early fade-out]
  2. Ice Machine 3.54 [early fade-out] (CD-maxi 1991: CDMUTE 013)
Recorded in December 1980. This single was not included on the 'Speak & Spell' LP. Both songs are a bit slow and dreary and the A-side does not really fit with the rest of the LP material.

13 June 1981 7"/12" (+ CDM) New Life

    New Life 3.43 / Shout! 3.44 (7": MUTE 014)

    New Life (Remix) 3.58 / Shout! (Rio Mix) 7.31 (12": 12 MUTE 014)

  1. New Life (Remix) 3.58
  2. Shout! 3.44
  3. Shout! (Rio Mix) 7.31 (CD-maxi 1991: CDMUTE 14)
Recorded in May 1981. 'New Life' is a vast improvement from the first single - highly danceable and with an infectious melody. Even the darker B-side is quite enjoyable. The 'Remix' is a short little 'dance' mix with an emphasized beat. Also the B-side got the 'dance' treatment (Rio Mix): the first part has a regular dance beat while part two is funny and latin-inspired.

7 Sep 1981 7"/12" (+ CDM) Just Can't Get Enough

    Just Can't Get Enough 3.41 / Any Second Now 3.06 (7": MUTE 016)

    Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix) 6.44 / Any Second Now (Altered) 5.41 (12": 12 MUTE 016)

  1. Just Can't Get Enough 3.41
  2. Any Second Now 3.06
  3. Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix) 6.44
  4. Any Second Now (Altered) 5.41 (CD-maxi 1991: CDMUTE 16)
Recorded in July 1981. A classic that needs no further comments. The B-side is an alternative instrumental version of track 10 on the LP.

11 Sep 1981 flexi 7" disc [Depeche Mode + Fad Gadget]

Depeche Mode: I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead 2.10 ["Flexi-Pop" Version] / [Fad Gadget: King of the Flies] (Magazine flexi 7": Flexipop 011)

  10. Any Second Now (voices) 2.35 [vocals by Martin Gore]
  11. Just Can't Get Enough 3.40 (LP: STUMM 5)

    1988 CD Bonus tracks:

  12. Dreaming of Me 4.00
  13. Ice Machine 4.04
  14. Shout! 3.44
  15. Any Second Now 3.06
  16. Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix) 6.44 (CD April 1988: CDSTUMM 5)
An excellent and happy-go-lucky synth pop album. Basically a "Yazoo" album more than a Depeche Mode album since Vince Clarke wrote most of the tracks. Skip 'What's Your Name?' though, it's arguably one of their worst songs ever.

29 Jan 1982 7"/12" (+ CDM) See You

See You 3.52 [single version] / Now This Is Fun 3.23 (7": MUTE 018)

See You (Extended Version) 4.50 / Now This Is Fun (Extended Version) 4.41 (12": 12 MUTE 018)

  1. See You (Extended Version) 4.50
  2. Now This Is Fun 3.23
  3. Now This Is Fun (Extended Version) 4.41 (CD-maxi 1991: CDMUTE 18)
Vince Clarke left in November 1981, and 'See You' was recorded that same month by the three remaining members. It's a fairly unremarkable pop tune which doesn't differ a lot from their earlier singles. The B-side is more upbeat and actually better than the A-side.

26 April 1982 7"/12" (+ CDM) The Meaning of Love

    The Meaning of Love 3.05 / Oberkorn (It's a Small Town) 4.07 (7": MUTE 022)

The Meaning of Love (Fairly odd mix) 4.59 / Oberkorn (It's a Small Town) (Development mix) 7.37 (12": 12 MUTE 022)

  1. The Meaning of Love 3.05
  2. Oberkorn 4.07
  3. The Meaning of Love (Fairly odd mix) 4.59
  4. Oberkorn (Development mix) 7.37 (CD-maxi 1991: CDMUTE 22)
Chewing gum synth pop in its bad sense; lots of happy melodies but where's the IQ? The answer is: on the B-side. 'Oberkorn', especially the extended/full length version, shows Martin Gore's talent for writing personal, sensitive and hauntingly beatiful instrumentals.

16 Aug 1982 7"/12" (+ CDM) Leave in Silence

    Leave in Silence 4.00 / Excerpt From: My Secret Garden 3.14 (7": 7BONG 1)

Leave in Silence (Longer) 6.30 // Further Excerpts From: My Secret Garden 4.22 / Leave in Silence (Quieter) 3.40 (12": 12BONG 1)

  1. Leave in Silence 4.00
  2. Excerpt From: My Secret Garden 3.14
  3. Leave in Silence (Longer) 6.30
  4. Further Excerpts From: My Secret Garden 4.22
  5. Leave in Silence (Quieter) 3.40 (CD-maxi 1991: CDBONG 1)
The introduction of the famous Simmons 'synth drum' gives a new and heavier 'electronic' sound. The result is darker, heavier and... better. The excellent B-side was also included on the LP, but this is a very different version; the main difference being that it's instrumental and faster - actually it's not an 'excerpt' at all, but a different mix. The 'quieter' mix is a weary 'demo' version with only a tiny melody line and vocals.

27 Sep 1982 LP (+ CD) A BROKEN FRAME

  1. Leave in Silence 4.46
  2. My Secret Garden 4.45
  3. Monument 3.13
  4. Nothing To Fear 4.15
  5. See You 4.32

  6. Satellite 4.42
  7. The Meaning of Love 3.05
  8. A Photograph of You 3.04
  9. Shouldn't Have Done That 3.12
  10. The Sun & the Rainfall 5.02 (LP: STUMM 9; CD July 1988: CDSTUMM 9)
The first two songs are the only really good tracks. My Secret Garden is the best track, here in a cooler and slower version than on the single. Side B contains some of the weakest songs they ever wrote, and coupled with the unimaginative use of the Simmons synth drum that side of the album sounds hopelessly outdated.

  5. Tora! Tora! Tora! (live) 4.00
  6. Get the Balance Right! 7.57 (German CD-maxi: INT 826.836)
Alan Wilder's studio debut resulted in an exciting single: a nice tune, a heavy beat and, for the first time, lyrics with some deeper meaning. The B-side is a quiet and whimsical throwaway with no rhythm or melody. The live tracks (recorded 25 Oct 1982 at Hammersmith Odeon) are interesting but not very different from the studio versions.

11 July 1983 7"/12" (+ CDM) Everything Counts

  5. The Meaning of Love (live) 3.14
  6. Everything Counts (In Larger Amounts) 7.18 (German CD-maxi: INT 826.837)
Slow-paced but with a memorable melody. The B-side is quite the reverse: uptempo but with almost no melody at all. The live tracks were recorded 25 Oct 1982 at Hammersmith Odeon; New Life (live) and Boys say Go! (live) sound very fresh, whereas not even a live performance can save the other two tracks.

  9. And Then... 4.34
  10. Everything Counts 0.59 (LP: STUMM 13; CD Jan 1986: CDSTUMM 13)
Apart from 2 and 3, this is an excellent album and probably their most 'electronic' sounding ever - (somewhat) intelligent and (environmentally) caring lyrics, heavy synths, clever melodies and often an amazing arrangement - just listen to the intro of track 9! The last track is a 'minimal' reprise version.

  5. Photographic (live) 3.56 (German CD-maxi: INT 826.838)
An obvious hit single. 'Fools', written and sung by Alan Wilder, has a catchy chorus but otherwise is of little interest. Love in Itself. 4 is an intersting and revealing acoustic demo version, live in the studio. The live tracks were recorded 25 Oct 1982 at Hammersmith Odeon; Just Can't Get Enough, Shout and Photographic are really great, and the live version of A Photograph of You shows what you can do with that song if you use heavier drums and bass - much better than the LP version!

12 March 1984 7"/12" (+ CDM) People Are People

    People Are People 3.43 / In Your Memory 4.01 [Alan Wilder] (7": 7BONG 5)

  3. People Are People (Different Mix) 7.11
  4. In Your Memory (Slick Mix) 8.12 (CD-maxi 1991: CDBONG 5)
A much heavier, stomping rhythm is introduced to instant international success. The B-side is written by Alan Wilder and is less rhytmical but excitingly electronic. The 'Different Mix' of People Are People (the 12" mix) is OK but lacks the flow - the rhythm stops and starts too much which may be good for the dance floor (?) but not for listening. The B-side Slick Mix is just as good as the 7" mix only longer. The limited edition 12" contains Adrian Sherwood's 'On U Sound Mix' of People Are People - this was DM's first attempt at letting someone else remix their own songs (I have never heard it and it was not included on the CD-maxi).

(Set Me Free) Remotivate Me (12" Mix by Joseph Watt) 7.59 / Are People People? 4.28 [remixed by Adrian Sherwood] (US 12": Sire, 0-20283)
Same musical style as People Are People, but lyrically there are strong S/M-sexual connotations. The B-side is a lighthearted dance track. The Voxless version is a very good instrumental remix. The 'ON-USound Science Fiction Dance Hall Classic' remix is a chop-up with added effects etc, which may have been 'cool' at the time but now it is mainly annoying I think. But the worst mix is the 'Are People People?' version of People Are People (also by Adrian Sherwood) which is genuinly annoying to listen to.

In stark contrast to Master and Servant, this is a very deep and 'serious' double A-sided single. In the 'remixed' Somebody a heartbeat is heard throughout the song, whereas in the LP version it is heard only towards the end. All live tracks were recorded 29 Sep 1984 at The Empire Theatre, Liverpool.

Not released on any LP, only on 'Singles' collection. Slow and introspective but still melodious. The B-side is not very enjoyable, and is best regarded as a humorous and experimental song I think. The 'Edit the Shake' version has added corny effects. Something To Do (Metal mix) is a terrible version!

Back to dance, and a great success (and tune!) it was too. Also only released on the 'Singles' collection. The excellent and cool B-side was, fortunately, included on their next real album.

  6. Fly on the Windscreen (Quiet mix) 4.23
  7. Black Day 2.34 [vocals by Martin Gore] (CD-maxi 1991: CDBONG 10)
With this single David Gahan's voice reached a new and previously unheard level of intensity. The B-side is straightforward and not very interesting in any aspect at all. The 'Highland' 12" mix of Stripped lacks flow. Breathing in Fumes is a pointless and boring show-off of effects. The 'Quiet mix' of Fly on the Windscreen could be a demo version, and you can feel its potential even without the heavy rhythm. Black Day is merely OK, slow and moody. Most tracks on the 12" single were included as bonus tracks on the CD album.

  13. But Not Tonight (Extended Remix) 5.11
  14. Black Day 2.34 (Gore/Wilder/Miller) [vocals by Martin Gore] (CD: CDSTUMM 26)
The title says it all - the music is darker and more serious than ever, but also often beautiful. A mixture of faster rhythmical tracks (1,2,6,7,11) and slower beautiful tracks.

  6. A Question of Lust (Minimal) 6.46 (CD-maxi 1991: CDBONG 11)
A slower and romantical choice for a single. The B-side is an instrumental with a strange and nightmarish atmosphere. People Are People live isn't bad but doesn't really add anything new. It Doesn't Matter Two (Instrumental) is quite good but is better with vocals. A Question of Lust (Minimal) is also quite good, but gets too repetitive towards the end. The four live tracks were recorded 30 Nov 1984 in Basel, Switzerland by Swiss Radio DRS3.

  8. A Question of Time (New Town Mix/Live Remix) 11.07 [remixed by Rico Conning] (CD-maxi 1991: CDBONG 12)
Even though this single isn't remixed by DM themselves, it is excellent. The live tracks were recorded on 10 April 1986 in Birmingham and are OK but do not offer anything new really. Black Celebration (Black Tulip mix) is rather weird and boring. The 11 min long 'New Town Mix/Live Remix' is OK but again does not offer anything really new and gets boring after a while, and about 8 minutes into the song it changes into a live recording. Strange....

Catchy and radio-friendly. The B-side Pimpf has some potential in the piano melody but its nightmarish qualities soon take over (unfortunately it was also included on the LP, I wonder if DM really liked it that much or if it was due to lack of songs!?). The Maxi Mix (12" mix) is pretty good, with extra rhythm and added sounds etc. 'Midi Mix' is very short, has no rhythm and sounds like they are just playing around with funny sounds. 'Blind Mix' has a very good beat, almost like Prince/Art of Noise. 'Pain Mix' is a 'dance-dub' with some added rhythm and often cheap sound effects. Agent Orange is a dreamy and rather beautiful instrumental.

Tougher and rougher. The B-side is an excellent uptempo dance track. The first 5 min of the 'Split Mix' sounds like the album version, then there is more rhythm and bass, quite good! 'Aggro Mix' is just that, an 'aggressive' and tough mix, quite good too! 'Tsangarides Mix' is so close to the original that it's hard to notice, I guess slightly more rhythm. Pleasure, Little Treasure (Join Mix) is almost acoustic with guitar etc, not bad and shows an unusual aspect of the song. To Have and To Hold (Spanish Taster) is very different from the album version: much lighter and more accessible - on the album it sounds dark and depressive.

The Remix has a heavier beat. Route 66 is a very rare case of Depeche making a cover of an old classic. The result - including electric guitars and Martin singing rock! - is well worth listening to. I don't like the Shep Pettibone Remix, it sounds very dated and unimaginative. Route 66 (Beatmasters Mix) is a truly good remix! Behind the Wheel (Beatmasters Mix) is not quite as good but definitely OK. Route 66 (Casualty Mix) is a 10 min adventure of exciting rhythms but still not too far from the original.

The B-side ('Stjärna' is Swedish for 'star') is a deceptively beatiful instrumental. It's one of those tunes that makes you wonder if it's the same person who wrote 'Master and Servant'! Sonata No. 14 is Alan Wilder playing this equally beautiful classical Beethoven piece.

All live tracks were recorded on 18 June 1988 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, and are rather true to the originals (Everything Counts and Nothing have a new instrumental break towards the end though and Sacred and A Question of Lust has some added rhythms). The remix by Tim Simenon/Mark Saunders (of Bomb the Bass fame) of Everything Counts has lots of extra sound effects and samples (including Kraftwerk samples) is pretty good. Their remix of Strangelove is also quite good. Nothing (Justin Strauss Mix) is very much based on the original but has an added synth rhythm and is almost better than Depeche's own original! Absolut Mix is very rhythm based and has almost no melody or vocals at all. The 'Reprise' is the same as the last track on the original LP.

Recorded live at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, on June 18th 1988. A good introduction to Depeche, and fun nostalgia for fans who heard them live, but these live versions are rarely more than carbon copies of the studio versions. The double disc SACD contains two extra tracks: a 'Hidden Track' and 'Pimpf (Full Version)', and "features 3 distinct versions of the concert: a remastered stereo CD version which is playable on all CD players, a remastered stereo SACD version and a remastered 5.1 surround sound SACD version."

Striptease rhythms to provocative lyrics created a minor scandal: extreme Christian movements complained that it was blasphemy while in reality the song was only about the lucrative business of giving blessings over the phone. As usual, Mr. Kevorkian as a mixer means heavy Kraftwerkian rhythms - and the song isn't bad at all. The B-side is also not bad at all, especially the 12" version (Sensual Mix) which has more bass and 'flow' that the 7" mix. Hazchemix is full of weird effects etc for the dance floor. Acoustic version is just that - only song and guitar. 'Holier Than Thou Approach' is the 12" mix which is quite good and with an impressive instrumental break! 'Pump Mix' is similar but intended mainly for the dance floor: it's more focused on the bass and rhythm and has almost no vocals or melody. 'Telephone Stomp Mix' is also similar to the 12" mix but focuses on a 'stick' sound and is pretty good.

Very radio-friendly and easy to like, but not very exciting. Memphisto is another deceptively beautiful instrumental (like Stjärna). Sibeling is equally beautiful: a slow and sad instrumental piano-based piece, quite in contrast with the rest of the material. The 'Harmonium' version is interesting: Martin himself sings to what sounds like a church organ demo version (!). Hands and Feet Mix is Francois Kevorkian's own version (he mixed the forthcoming album) and is good, whereas his Ecstatic Dub and Bass Line sounds weird and utterly outdated today. Ricki Tik Tik Mix is a very good instrumental 'electro' version! The very limited and long The Quad: Final Mix is quite varied but in a negative sense because it has too many styles, from orchestral to cheap rhythms and other things in between, bad for the dance floor, bad for listening, I wonder what the purpose was for cretaing this mix.....??

An obvious single. It is hard to recognise the B-side Kaleid as Depeche Mode - it's a heavy 'techno-synth' instrumental - but I like it! Unless you really love more or less weird dub remixes for the dance floor, none of the remixes are worth listening to except for the regular 12" mix of Policy of Truth ('Beat Box').

The fourth and final single from Violator (although 'Halo' was planned as the fifth). World in My Eyes is an edited (shortened) version of the album version. Happiest Girl is pulsating, cosy and cool, especially the 12" Kiss-a-Mix version. Sea of Sin is a bit more laidback with a hypnotic rhythm and a rather good melody. World in My Eyes (Oil Tank Mix) is not bad but should have had a better continuity in the rhythm since it's a 12" mix. The 'Dub in My Eyes mix' is similar but has more dub effects. 'Mode to Joy' is a soft dance remix by Jon Marsh; 'Mayhem Mode' is another remix by him that is a bit harder in the sound (I don't like any of them very much). The two Orbital remixes (by The Orb) are much better and has class and a typical 'Orb' feeling.

16 Sep 1991 various artists soundtrack UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD

Premiered in Germany 12 Sep 1991, and later on elsewhere. First released on soundtrack in Germany 16 Sep 1991, and later on elsewhere. Like most of the songs which Martin sings himself, this has excellent and sensitive vocals, a sensitive subject ('the beauty of death') and a haunting melody to a sparse arrangement. Not much of it was played in the actual movie though.

DM is back with a vengeance! Heavy live drums and electric guitars, maybe a minor shock to some fans of pure DM electronica, but as they later explained it: they didn't want to let the single say 'excuse us, but we're back'. But I like the single. The B-side is quite a contrast: very calm and beautiful with strings and Martin on vocals (it was included on the album as well). The 'Throb Mix' is the so called 12" mix and is quite good, even better than the single/album version! 'Babylon Mix' is a weird and enervating dance remix. The two (quite similar) Brian Eno remixes are based on the intro rhythm and are quite relaxing and mysterious. The 'renegade soundwave afghan surgery mix' is instrumental with a fast-paced and rather tough rhythm, not bad at all. Mark Stent's 'helmet at the helm mix' is a simple and quite boring dance version.

Mixed by Mark Stent, Depeche Mode and Flood. Their least 'electronic' album, and probably few fans hold it as their favourite. It's not bad but the focus seems to be on a hefty sound rather than on melodies. 1,4,7,8 are in the same rough-drums-and-guitar style, 2,6,10 are 'normal' Depeche songs, 5 and 9 are very beautiful, especially 5, whereas 3 is the worst song on the album - someone convinced them it should have gospel background vocals, which I hope will never happen again.

    (CD-maxi 29 March 2004 in box DMBX 5: CDBONG 22X)
A rather 'normal' sounding single after the heavy first one. Based on the album version but omits the last 35 last seconds and also sounds slighly different with some extra bass sounds and a few other extra sounds. The B-side My Joy is good enough for the album, especially the long version which has more bass and better 'flow'. The Extended 12" Mix has some extra rhythm but apart from that is very similar to the album version. Grungy Gonads Mix has lots of added subtle effects but I like the album version (and even the 12" mix) better. William Orbit is a true master with sounds and I actually like his Random Carpet Mix better than Depeche's own version! (It would even have been better entirely instrumental and without any of the original Depeche samples, because William is at his best when he does all the sounds himself.) Anandamidic Mix is calm with a lazy and relaxing rhythm and some extra bass etc, not bad. Ambient Whale Mix is even calmer but I don't like the idea to add whale song (not that I don't like whale song but it sounds too pretentious in this context).

Adding a soft drum pattern doesn't help this song, I never liked it, almost like gospel which does not suite DM. The 'jazz mix' of Death's Door is very similar to the 1991 soundtrack version, but is extended and has some subtle added sounds (the part after 3.52 features no vocals). Rush 'spiritual guidance mix' has an added drum-rhythm etc, and is listenable. The 'amylnitrate mix' is heavy dance and very little remains of the original, while the 'wild planet - vocal mix' is pretty close to the original and is quite OK. The live tracks were recorded at the Forum, Milan, 1993; they sound rather close to the original album version (Enjoy the Silence has a guitar solo though).

Exactly the same songs in exactly the same order as on the studio album. The only difference is lower sound quality and some audience noise and applauses. A pointless release.

This is the first time an outside remixer did a regular single remix for Depeche - but it is not so different, it's more acoustic in its arrangement. The Adrenaline Mix of Higher Love is a rather slick and superficial dance mix. Brian Eno's Apex Mix is magic! Portishead's Jeep Rock Mix is a rather relaxed and soft but repetitive dance mix, not too far from the original. The six live tracks were recorded in 1993 in Liévin: In Your Room is similar to the album version, Policy of Truth has an extra bass sound and is quite good, World in My Eyes, Fly on the Windscreen and Never Let Me Down Again are modernised and very good (older tracks played live are often interesting as the sound is usually updated and fresh) while Death's Door is only accompanied by piano and female gospel-like background singers which sounds OK but the original is much better.

DM goes really heavy: a ferocious guitar, sweaty rhythms and tormented vocals. Not for the faint-hearted and not very commercial, but a daring move and a favourite if you can stand the heat. Painkiller is a mildly interesting instrumental that, according to DM, should work as a mental painkiller in order to relax your mind. The Underworld Soft Mix is without any rhythm and is rather cosy and calm, whereas One Inch Punch Mix (obviously inspired by Bruce Lee) is rather unpleasant and disharmonic (Version 2 isn't any better). Underworld Hard Mix is - harder, and very repetitive with break beat rhythm. United Mix is rather slow and cosy with a tough/rough sound to it with guitars etc. Not bad actually. 3 Phase Mix is far from the original and has a fast rhythm but not very hard and is more of a trance-audio adventure than a dance mix I think. The Plastikman Mix of Painkiller is similar to the original version but with a sharper and almost Kraftwerkian edge to the rhythm, I like it better than the original.

Back to 'normal' Depeche Mode again. It received a healthy amount of radio play (and still does to this day!), and it's a very strong song. The B-side, Slowblow, is a quiet and slow instrumental background song; not bad but really not worth buying this CDM for. In order to get Depeche Mode's 'real' mixes of both songs you had to buy both singles (which is of course a record company in order to improve sales). I actually find Dom T's 'Bass Bounce Mix' annoying, some kind of bass overdose that is best suited on the dancefloor. Speedy J Mix is some kind of repetitive 'drum & bass' style that I also find annoying. Hardfloor's mix, well to me it sounds like they simply added their own extra dance beat, I find it boring and very unoriginal. Andrea Parker's Mix is weird, but at least original. Not for listening, but not for dancing either. The Motor Bass Mix completes this series of lousy remixes, it has a 'black' (?) style but I don't like it. The B-side also got the remix treatment - by Darren Price - who did a good job, actually I prefer it to the original, it's cosy and relaxing, especially towards the end. Well done Darren!

A beautiful and impressive favourite about death (!). This 'single remix' by Tim Simenon/Q is very similar to the album version, with some slightly added emphasis on the rhytm and bass and also it has some subtle extra sounds. Air 'Around the Golf' Remix is quite pleasant and not bad at all, but it feels like Martin's vocals drown a bit in Stephane Briat's so carefully produced remix. The same goes for LFO's Meant To Be mix, very nicely done and pleasant to listen to, but the music overwhelmes the vocals. Skylab's 'The Noodles and the Damage Done' version manages to make rock out of this ballad, a bold move. I'm not too fond of this version, but it's OK. Jedi Knights Remix's is weird and unpleasant, the bass gives me a headache. The Grantby Mix is not too far from the original and is not bad.

This remixed version has some additional rhythms and sounds, otherwise it's more or less the same as the album version. The 'Escape from Wherever' mix is rather calm and close to the beginning of the original (before the rhythm starts), until 4.11 when it gets a bit chaotic with backward effects etc, as a whole this mix feels almost schizophrenic. Cosmic Blues Mix also starts rather calm, then gets a bit weird, I don't like it. CJ Bolland Ultrasonar Mix has a soft rhytm for the most part but sometimes there are weird sounds and as a whole the mix feels incoherent and unfocused (I have not heard the CJ Bolland Funky Sub mix, sorry). The "Kruder + Dorfmeister Session" mix is rather similar to the original but with a relaxed and almost lazy dance beat, and from 6.48 to 9 min ca the sound changes totally to a jazzy rhythm (!) and all the time you hear (added) vinyl cracks and pops for a nostalgic feel I guess. I don't see the point with Carl Craig's Air 20 Mix, weird and unfocused. The live version is fairly close to the original, but has additional musicians (Dave Clayton on keyboards and Christian Eigner on drums).

Track 1 is pleasant, slow and moody, but also tough and adventourous, with polished and soft vocals by David. Track 2 is also slow and moody with a nice and relaxed jazzy kind of feeling and lamenting vocals. Track 3 is an unusual (for DM) fast-paced instrumental. It has some nice sounds but I doubt that many DM fans will play it very often. Subsonic Legacy Remix has an OK rhythm, but is rather repetitive and even boring. Dan the Automator Remix is hard to describe because it keeps changing and has many different sounds and styles in it, for example classical strings, scratching and "yo" vocals, etc. I don't like it. Gus Gus Mix has a rather dark and cool-ish rhythm and bass-line, not bad. Luke Slater's Remix of Headstar is some kind of fast techno style, not my type of music. Surrender (Catalan FC Out of Reach Mix) is a relaxed and happy disco version with a rhythm that totally takes over the vocals, I'm not so sure it works well. The previously unreleased Safar Mix of World in My Eyes is also dance-disco style, OK but once again the rhythm takes over totally.

Rather cosy but I can't remember that DM has ever released a single with so little melody and with such a weak rhythm. Easy Tiger is only two minutes on the album, but this is the full 5 minute version. Easy Tiger 'Bertrand Burgalat & A.S. Dragon version' is a total re-recording: a somewhat relaxed rock band version with drums and guitar and all. Dream On 'Bushwacka Tough Guy Mix' is actually quite good and cosy and adds pleasant relaxed rhythms. Dave Clarke Acoustic Version is relaxed and OK, but nothing special really. Octagon Man Mix is.... weird! Kid 606 Mix is also weird (but not fully as weird) and full of blip-sounds. I have not heard the last few mixes, sorry.

I wouldn't really call this album 'exciting' since it focuses on relaxing and atmospheric songs rather than on rhythms and strong melodies (I guess that has something to do with the fact that the members have aged?) Personally I consider it a late night album and prefer to program it to play the songs 1-3, 7-8, 11-12. If I want to remember their 'good old' style I play 'I Feel Loved', if I feel vicious then I play 'Dead of Night' (I don't like the too chaotic ending though), and if I want to fall asleep I play 4 and 13.

An obvious single choice. 'Dirt' is a slow and cool cover with a dirty 'striptease' rhythm, and you've never heard David sing like this. Nice. The 'extended instrumental' version of I Feel Loved is not too far from the original but I would have preferred to have the original version extended and slightly remixed instead - after all it alreday has a very good rhythm so why change it around?? Danny Tenaglia's Labor of Love Edit is a rather commercial and easy listening dance version - an interesting detail is that he uses old Depeche sound samples which creates a fun and nostalgic effect. Thomas Brinkmann Mix is also dance but not as easy listening. Chamber's Mix is even more dance, almost techno style and mainly consists of rhythm and vocals.

It's hard to describe Flood's Mix but it's a bit more 'atmospheric-electronic' than the album version and just as good. 'Zenstation' is slightly oriental ('Zen') version of Easy Tiger, and if someone had just edited out a few uneasy parts it would probably have fitted rather well amongst the 'cosy' late night tracks on the album. I have not heard any of the other mixes, sorry!

I will only comment on the seven new remixes on the third bonus disc, as all the other remixes are older ones and have already been released before. Photographic (Rex the Dog Dubb Mix) is OK, and adds a modern rhythm, but to me it is nothing special really. Maybe the young generation likes it better, which is - after all - the purpose. Little 15 (Ulrich Schnauss Remix) is done with a great feeling, I must say that. After 2,5 minutes a light hypnotic rhythm starts, and in all this remix is very well produced (but why distort David's vocals??). Nothing (Headcleanr Rock Mix) is a total contrast, a heavy rocky version, I like it! Lie To Me ('The Pleasure of Her Private Shame' Remix by LFO) sounds claustrophobic and dark, I don't like it. After 3,5 minutes a rhythm starts, which makes it better. Clean (Colder Version) is very dark and repetitive, mainly because they removed the melody. You can't dance to it, and I don't see how anyone could really enjoy listening to it either. Halo (Goldfrapp Remix) is amazingly well produced and turns the track into an atmospheric and almost cinematic version with added angel choirs and all. I am impressed! Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted) was issued as a single too, and is a rockier version with electric guitar and all. Enjoyable.

A good single with a 'retro' sound. If you want the dark and mysterious track "Free" you need to buy the limited CD-maxi, a method used by record companies to make the single reach higher on the charts by making fans buy two singles. Sasha's Spooky Mix is a pleasant danceable but also quite listenable version (even if it's pretty far from the original). Sasha's Gargantuan mix is similar. The "Misc. Full Vocal Mix" is very "electronic" with small blip sounds, not bad. I will not describe the other mixes as they were never available commercially, and besides they are only for dancing.

  10. Damaged People 3.30 [vocals by Martin Gore]
  11. Lilian 4.50
  12. The Darkest Star 6.55 (CDStumm 260)
The comment on the back of the CD "pain and suffering in various tempos" may serve as a short review of this album, because it IS a dark album. Don't expect it to have more melodic radio-friendly songs like Precious. My favourites are 'The Sinner in Me' (with its dark, exciting, menacing rhythm and haunting, hypnotic melody), 'Precious' (the first single), 'Macro' (one of two songs sung by Martin, although it sometimes has a slightly over-produced sound), 'Damaged People' (an absolutely wonderful song, this is Martin at his best!), and 'The Darkest Star' (a slow anthem of beauty, sadness and mystery). The first two songs 'A Pain That I'm Used To' and 'John the Revelator' have a rougher and dirtier sound, and although they have a relatively good rhythm they lack a strong melody. 'Introspective' is a short OK instrumental. 'Lilian' is certainly not one of Martin's best songs, and is actually a rather boring and unpolished song considering having been written by him. The remaining three songs (Suffer Well, I Want It All and Nothing’s Impossible) were written by Dave Gahan together with Eigner/Phillpott, and I believe it was one of Dave's conditions for making this album that he was allowed to contribute his own songs. His previous solo album did not sell well (I assume for a good reason) and certainly these three songs do not enrich the album in any way, even if the production makes them slightly more interesting than they actually are.

'Newborn': I was never a big fan of songs with varying tempo, unless it is really well done. Newborn is an impressive track during its upbeat parts - well worth being on the album - and during its slower parts it is rather cosy, but as a whole it is somewhat confusing. I would have preferred making two tracks out of it - and put them both on the album! I have only heard Telex's remix, and I love it, but I'm sure Goldfrapp's remix is great too.

Honestly I don't know how the producer was thinking when he selected the tracks that would end up on the album and the ones that were to be on singles only. 'Better Days' is one amazing piece of fast-paced rhytmhic candy for Depeche fans, and it sounds almost as if it was a brother to Master and Servant, only a bit darker. Out of the remixes only the M83 remix is worth mentioning, it's quite listenable and original, and also Tiga Remix is OK, but the others are more or less for dance only.

Both songs on this 'duble A-sides single' are from the album, a bit remixed, but they are still not my favourites. If you like the songs, which I'm sure many fans do, it is probably worth getting it, but they are not THAT different. Tiefschwarz' Remix is very Kraftwerk-ish and I actually almost like it better than the original version. Many of the other remixes are also good and original.

This 'new' song was actually recorded for 'Playing the Angel' but rejected because it was 'too upbeat' for the rest of the album. Well, is that not also what fans want? Anyway, it's good track, with well-produced sounds making it sound almost Kraftwerk-like at times (but not as upbeat as Better Days...).

  13. Corrupt 5.04 / [untitled hidden track] 0.41 (CD STUMM 300)
I usually never review an album as an album, but as individual tracks, so I will comment on the tracks in order: after a long annoying intro, the first track In Chains is a rather cool and laid back affair, but also a bit daring, uncommercial and even weird in its arrangement, and I salute Depeche for taking a stand by putting this track first on the album, showing that they care about their integrity and uniqueness. The second track Hole to Feed was written by Dave Gahan/Christian Eigner/Andrew Phillpott, not by Martin Gore, and I never liked most of Dave's (co-)written tracks. This one is a bit rough, unpolished and blusey, not a typical Depeche track - but his vocals are good, as always. Wrong, the first single, is tough and daring, not unsimilar to their earlier singles like I Feel You and Barrel of a Gun, and I like it! Fragile Tension is more easy-listening and synthy with a relaxing electronic rhythm and a soft melody, but with vocals that are a bit tormented, an interesting contrast - a perfectly OK track, nothing more, nothing less. Little Soul is quite the opposite: mellow, mysterious, dark, melancholic, sad, sometimes with a Twin Peaks touch - I like it, but can't stop to wonder what it would have sounded like if Martin sang it instead (I believe he is singing backing vocals). In Sympathy is a simple song, also in its arrangement, but sounds like a filler. It's an OK track but nothing more, Martin can write better songs than this, and surely they can create more exciting arrangements! Dave does his best to make the song interesting though. Peace sounds like a sing-along! I find it quite slow and boring, and also unfocused and uneven - some parts are not bad, and some interesting sounds here and there, but in general I think this is below their standard. As usual Dave tries his best with his vocals´though. Come Back, also written by Dave Gahan/Christian Eigner/Andrew Phillpott, is one of the rare tracks written by Dave that I actually like! Slow, cosy, moody and dark, much in the same style as the "cosy" tracks on EXCITER from 2001. The short instrumental Spacewalk also sounds very much like the cosy tracks from EXCITER! Perfect is impressive with its cool slow rhythm and very nice atmosphere, I like it a lot - one of the best tracks on the album! Miles Away/The Truth Is, the final track written by Dave Gahan/Christian Eigner/Andrew Phillpott, has no melody, has a lousy rhythm and is even disharmonic, and I think it was a big mistake to include it. Boooooo! Jezebel... thank you Martin for writing and singing tracks like these! I guess you either hate or love the tracks that he sings himself, and I love them. Magical, sad, mysterious, beautiful, all in one wonderful mix. No one can sing like you Martin! It's a pity, though, that he only sings on one track on the album :( The final album track Corrupt is a bit similar to the first track, and reminds in part of I Feel You from 1993. I like it mostly, but it has some uneven and (too) noisy (refrain) parts.

  11. Wrong (Caspa Remix) 5.04
In order to get all these extra tracks, you need to buy the entire (rather expensive) 3-CD+DVD box set. "Light" has a rhythm that is similar to Fragile Tension & In Sympathy - which is probably why it was not included on the album (it's not a bad track, but would not have made the album either worse nor better). The Sun and the Moon and the Stars is similar to Jezebel: Martin sings, it has a calm and cosy atmosphere, the arrangement a bit cluttered at times but it's still a good track and would have made the album better and more varied (that's my way of saying that it's a shame it was not included!). "Ghost" is minimalistic, hypnotic, slow, dark and cosy, and would also have improved the album. Esque is a (too short) atmospheric and dreamy instrumental, and would have made the album more varied. Oh Well is a long and minimalistic dance track with an interesting and quite infectious beat (a bit like Pet Shop Boys could do!). Even if it has no real melody, it still would have improved the album and made it more varied.

Next, the "remixes". I don't like most of them. Corrupt - Efdemin Remix is meaningless and annoyingly repetivive. In Chains - Minilogue's Earth Remix is equally meaningless and monotonous dub. Little Soul - Thomas Fehlmann Flowing Ambient Mix - "flowing ambient" pretty well describes the style. Thomas makes the same kind of music as always, with or without The Orb, and he makes it well, with feeling (even though it, too, can become monotonous after a while - but it rather well fits the original style of the original track) and this is the only remix on this CD that I actually think was worth including. Jezebel - SixToes Remix - hmmmmmm a weird, slow depressing and disharmonic arrangement with distorted violins and strings. I don't like it. Perfect - Electronic Periodic Dark Drone Mix - a minimalistic version with blip-sounds and light electronic rhythm, it's ok, but the original version is far better. Wrong - Caspa Remix - tries too hard to impress with extra sounds, but the flow of the original track gets ruined.

Normally, demos are simply inferior sounding first versions, but in the case of Depeche Mode a demo is (usually) Martin's own original version where he himself sings on his own song. In the case of the earlier songs (= not from SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE) I think all tracks are interesting to hear.

All in all not too far from what could be expected from DM in 2013. Most songs have Martin singing backing vocals in the chorus, which is always a nice addition to Dave's voice. I like 7, 8, 10 and 12 best. 8 is a classic and wonderful "Martin Gore solo" effort. 7 and 10 are the most "classic synthy DM", great rhythm and melody. 12 has a great chorus. 1 and 2 are dark and dirty, and I like them. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are more or less "cosy", and are alright. 9 and 11 are nothing special. The last track is OK-ish, a kind of bluesy strip tease rhytm.

  2. Happens All the Time 4.19 (Dave Gahan/Kurt Uenala)
  3. Always 5.05 [vocals by Martin Gore]
  4. All That’s Mine 3.22 (Dave Gahan/Kurt Uenala) (88765 46063 2)
Like the previous album, I don't know why these tracks were delegated to a "bonus CD". Because the three first are as good, or better, than many of the "regular" album tracks. 1 is "cosy" and relatively electronic, slow and hypnotic. 2 also has a nice, mysterious atmosphere. Martin sings on 3, partly in a stranger unusual style with distorted vocals, and partly in his "usual" beautiful style. 4 is OK-ish.

  2. Soothe My Soul (Tom Furse – The Horrors Remix) 4.58

All the remixes are OK, except "Billy F Gibbons and Joe Hardy Remix" which is outstanding! Yes it's Mr Gibbons from ZZ Top! And it's better than the album version!
